Professor Director, Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre
Jon Stoessl received his M.D. from University of Western Ontario (UWO) in 1979, followed by an internship at McGill University, and a neurology residency at UWO. In 1984, he moved to the University of British Columbia and spent two years working with Donald B. Calne and the PET program. Dr. Stoessl pursued further training in neuropharmacology in England after which he joined the faculty at UWO. In 1996, he returned to UBC, where he currently directs the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre, which uses PET as its major research tool to investigate the causes of Parkinson’s, the basis for complications of advanced disease and its treatment, and the role of dopamine in signaling reward and expectation. The Centre’s research is supported by a Team Grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a Research Unit Award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, a Centre Grant from the Pacific Alzheimer Research Foundation, and numerous operating grants. The Centre’s research program is inextricably linked with TRIUMF’s Life Sciences program and heavily dependent upon its expertise in the development, production, and delivery of radiotracers. Jon holds a Tier-1 Canada Research Chair. In 2007, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. |
