TRIUMF PSRC Meeting
May 3, 2007 13:00 – 14:10
Attending: Stu Austen (Chair), John Drozdoff, Ann Fong, Brenda Morrey,
Mike Mouat, Klaus Reiniger, Roman Ruegg (Ex-officio)
The Committee unanimously approved the minutes from the April 5 meeting.
The Committee recognized that its members were split about whether they favoured a new or more traditional style of page for the PSRC’s web site, however a motion was made to adopt the new style.
Motion: To adopt the new style of PSRC web site page developed by M. Hapke.
Passed: By majority.
J. Drozdoff will ask P. Jones to implement the change and Committee members will review the new pages to identify out-of-date information for eventual removal.
The topic again turned to salaries and the thought that a higher scale may benefit Technical staff that might not have the same opportunities for merit increases. Some options that might reconcile the perceived inequity have not been ruled out. Committee members also noted that the number of Technician classification ranks has been expanded upwards to recognize senior and supervisory responsibilities.
S. Austen reported on a recent OPCOM meeting he had attended where a presentation on budget projections was made. He felt that the material in the presentation would be of interest to Committee members and will ensure that it remains an agenda item for the next PSRC meeting.
The topic of remuneration was discussed in terms of the various administrative processes that advance people through the levels of their respective employee group. A Job Description is certainly an important document that justifies promotions between levels but it is does not warrant an annual revision. It is the outcome of the yearly Performance Review that really determines just how fast a transition between levels occurs.
The meeting ended with a very general discussion about how the TRIUMF workplace (and the TRIUMF workers themselves) have changed over time. Increased workloads to meet additional responsibilities such QA requirements can be handled for a short period, but in the long run affects the qualities that have traditionally made TRIUMF a desirable place to work. This may make it difficult to retain older workers and recruit new ones.
S. Austen also asked Committee members to identify specific issues that they feel should be represented to the new Director. A meeting with the new Director, N. Lockyer, will be arranged for sometime after the next PSRC regular meeting on June 7.
