Go Physics! Engaging Local Students at TRIUMF

24 May 2010

Thirty young, bright students are coming to TRIUMF to tackle the greatest unsolved mysteries facing the next generation of theoretical physicists and to explore concepts from Newton to Hawking.

On Friday, May 28, TRIUMF will be hosting Go Physics! — a one day camp initiated by Canada’s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) to supercharge young students’ theoretical physics brains: from Einstein’s warped spacetime and the weird quantum world of atoms to the greatest challenge of all: a unified theory of everything.

The select grade 11 and grade 12 students with a keen interest and strong ability in both physics and mathematics will explore what it means to study physics. Engaged in hands‐on labs and ‘minds‐on’ challenges in thinking like a physicist, students will take part in brainstorming sessions, conceptual studies on topics such as relativity and quantum physics, demos, group work, and presentations.

The Go Physics! program is a scaled-down one-day version of PI’s International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) program.  In April, two Go Physics! Events took place on-location at PI in Waterloo, Ontario. In addition to this camp hosted at TRIUMF on May 28, there will be an upcoming event in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 26, and a “Physics of Innovation” event on UBC Campus, Vancouver, on May 29.

Dr. Richard Epp, Manager of Scientific Outreach at PI, will present a morning talk to a larger group of teachers and students on “Physics of Innovation” at UBC campus. Dr. Epp has a background in both engineering and theoretical physics, is knowledgeable about the entire spectrum of physics, and enjoys introducing people of all ages to the mysteries and wonders of our amazing universe.
