13 January 2009

Last Friday, January 9, 2009 Bruce Ralston, a Member of Legislative Assembly from Surrey-Whalley was a guest at TRIUMF's facilities. He visited to learn more about TRIUMF and its contribution to British Columbia. Bruce is a lawyer in Surrey where he has operated in his own law firm for the last 18 years. He has served as chair of the VanCity Savings Credit Union Board as well as a member of the Surrey City Council. Bruce has obtained a History and Law degree from the University of British Columbia and a degree in History from the University of Cambridge in London, England.

During his afternoon tour, Bruce Ralston witnessed some of the ongoing experiments and learned about the continuous growth in science, technology, and innovation that TRIUMF has to offer. Bruce was especially interested by the Canadian ATLAS Tier 1 Data Centre which was designed, developed and implemented by a team co-led by Dr. Reda Tafirout, a Research Scientist at TRIUMF. This Data Centre will participate in the storage and analysis of petabytes of data generated by the ATLAS detector at CERN in Switzerland. It is one of nearly a dozen Tier-1 centres in national computing facilities around the world. Engaged by TRIUMF’s capacity, Bruce Ralston enjoyed his experience and thanked Director Dr. Nigel S. Lockyer for the tour.
