TRIUMF, Canada’s National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, is pleased to announce a partnership with Virtual Researcher On Call (VROC). VROC, an education initiative of Partners in Research, creates opportunities for the next generation of potential Canadian scientists to interact with current experts in the research community. With the use of video-conferencing technology, VROC connects an expert with a high-school class to provide an interactive learning experience and to encourage the students to develop an interest in the field of science.
VROC will work with TRIUMF to share the personality and expertise of TRIUMF scientists with a much larger audience. Students will learn about some of TRIUMF’s current projects from experts on subjects varying from the medical applications of the proton beam to TRIUMF’s participation in the Tier-1 computing centre for ATLAS, a large experiment at the CERN Laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland.
The new partnership with VROC will leverage TRIUMF’s extensive experience in connecting with people worldwide through its three existing video conferencing stations. A videoconference featuring one of TRIUMF’s nuclear astrophysicists, Chris Ruiz, has already been scheduled for early April. As the pace of research is continuous and ever forward, it is necessary to retain an open link between present and future researchers.
