01 April 2008

A celebration will be held Sunday, May 4, 2008, to honour a man of many talents -- Professor Erich Vogt. One of Canada’s Who’s Who, Professor Vogt is perhaps best known as a founder and one of the prime proponents of TRIUMF and in serving as its director from 1981 until 1994. But Professor Vogt is also famous for his commitment and contributions to UBC, where he has served as a researcher, teacher, and Vice-President, Academic. As an officer of the Order of Canada, Professor Vogt was the first chair of the Science Council of B.C. and took a lead role in developing Science World, the Vancouver Institute and the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

The celebration will be held at UBC's Hebb Theatre and will be hosted by the UBC Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Many distinguished members of the scientific community will speak on his behalf at the Erich Vogt Symposium including the Hon. Stan Hagen, TRIUMF director Nigel Lockyer, SNOlab director Art McDonald, and Nobel-prize winners Carlo Rubbia and Walter Kohn. Following the symposium, a reception will feature a semi-open microphone tribute. Those wishing to speak can sign up on the event’s website below.

In addition to honouring Erich, the event is a "kick-off" for a fundraising campaign to support First Year Student Research Experiences: a summer salary subsidy analogous to NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards but meant specifically for first-year students.

Please plan to join the celebration!
