Every year, the TRIUMF Users Group holds an annual general meeting (TUG-AGM) to report on the progress of TRIUMF’s experiments. The purpose of this is to update the users of the TRIUMF facility on upcoming developments, the status of present experiments, and to provide advice and counsel to the TRIUMF management on operating policy and facilities.
Adam Garnsworthy, this year’s TRIUMF Users Group Executive Committee (TUEC) Chair, explains that the TRIUMF Users’ Group includes “all scientists, post-docs, and students from around the world who use TRIUMF by running experiments here, building equipment at TRIUMF, and involved in other TRIUMF activities. Most of the day is presentations from primarily students and post-docs on recent highlights of the science which TRIUMF is involved in. There are also updates and overviews from the director and each division head on information on activities which affect all users; information such as the progress of major projects, funding situations and prospects, and resource availability.”
The TUG-AGM was held last Monday, July 9, 2012, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the TRIUMF Auditorium. The room was filled with people, eager to learn more about what’s been going on around the site for the past year. The presentations touched on topics ranging from nuclear physics and particle physics to fundamental symmetries and theoretical studies.
At the end of the session, “there was an open question session where users’ had the opportunity to ask the Division heads any questions they wanted.” After which, the whole Users’ Group was able to finish the day off with a social barbeque held in the TRIUMF Courtyard.
By the end of the year, a new chair of the TUEC for 2013 will be chosen. Nominations and an election will take place by e-mail vote.
Congratulations, Adam, for a successful meeting!
