Author Michael Pollan shares his manifesto: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."
On June 6th, the parking lot at TRIUMF was unusually full for a Saturday as visitors and supporters of the UBC Farm from around the Lower Mainland came out in droves for the latest Farm fundraiser, Pollanate UBC Farm. Over the years, the TRIUMF parking lot has played host to many UBC Farm activities, from The Feast of Fields to the 2009 Great Farm Trek.
This most recent event, presented in partnership by Barbara-Jo's Books to Cooks and the UBC Farm, featured a presentation and book signing by award-winning author Michael Pollan. The stop at the UBC Farm was Pollan's only Canadian city on his book tour for the paperback version of critically acclaimed In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto. Aside from Pollan's many literary achievements, including The Omnivore's Dilemma, Second Nature, The Botany of Desire, and A Place of My Own, he is also a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine and the Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley.
The afternoon fundraiser attracted 700 people and all proceeds raised will support the UBC Farm. Guests were treated to a wide offering of snacks and samplers from some of Vancouver's finest restaurants that use sustainably sourced, local ingredients, and were entertained by various musical ensembles and tours around the farm.
