TIME Magazine: 2012 Person of the Year Runner-Up -- Fabiola Gianotti
U.S. TIME Magazine has selected its Persons of the Year for 2012. Particle physicsit extraordinaire and spokesperson for the ATLAS team of particle physicists, Fabiola Gianotti was selected as a runner-up. She is placed alongside Tim Cook, Malala Yousafzai, and Mohamed Morsi. U.S. President Barack Obama was named Person of the Year.

More than a decade ago, Canadians faced a choice about which Higgs-hunting experiment to join at CERN and its massive particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Predicting that combined forces would provide a greater impact, Canadians joined the ATLAS experiment and the ATLAS-Canada collaboration was born. Presently headed by Professor Rob McPherson (of University of Victoria and an Institute of Particle Physics scientist), the team was delighted to see its overall leader and champion -- Fabiola -- get the crowning recognition.
Canada joined a winning team!
