Award Recognizes Italian-Canadian Ties

15 October 2014

In a private ceremony yesterday, Dr. Emanuele Fiore, Scientific Attaché of the Embassy of Italy, was presented with TRIUMF’s inaugural Patron of Science award. Dr. Fiore received the award in the presence of His Excellency Gian Lorenzo Cornado, the Ambassador of Italy to Canada, the Honourable Angela Fucsia Nissoli, Member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, and Consul General of Italy in Vancouver Fabrizio Inserra. This was Ambassador Cornado’s first visit to the laboratory since assuming his role in April 2013.

“We are delighted to welcome His Excellency Gian Lorenzo Cornado to TRIUMF and celebrate Dr. Fiore’s collaborative spirit through the Patron of Science award,” said Dr. Jonathan Bagger, TRIUMF Director. “Dr. Fiore’s work has advanced intellectual, diplomatic, and business connections between TRIUMF, Canada, and Italy.”

TRIUMF established the Patron of Science award to recognize the selfless and meritorious contributions of individuals outside the organization who supported the laboratory.

Dr. Fiore has brought Canada and Italy into closer partnership, from inter-university cooperation to applied research and technology innovation. For example, since 2011, Dr. Fiore has hosted TRIUMF at the Embassy’s annual Canada-Italy Research and Innovation University roundtables.

In 2011, three TRIUMF researchers, Anadi Canepa, Franco Mammarella, and Alice Miceli, founded ARPICO, the Society of Italian Researchers and Professionals in Western Canada. This is one of three associations representing the community of over 3,000 Italian researchers in Canada and is supported by 117 cooperation agreements between universities in both countries.

“Fiore has been instrumental in creating ARPICO and in establishing its profile, both in Canada and abroad,” said Anadi Canepa, President of ARPICO. “His vision has helped us bring together a global network of researchers who work collaboratively to promote professional development and nurture dialogue between Italy and Canada, thereby improving the effectiveness of research in both countries.”

Dr. Fiore has officially concluded his term at the Embassy in Canada and returns to Italy this fall.
