TRIUMF Deputy Director Dr. Reiner Kruecken sits with TU Darmstadt President Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Prömel to sign the MOU
TRIUMF has always thrived on its partnerships, not only with Canadian universities but also with universities around the world.
On Wednesday, November 16th, a delegation from TU Darmstadt in Germany visited TRIUMF to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two organizations with the aim to strengthen collaboration and enable exchange of students and researchers.
The camaraderie shared among the two organizations was immediately obvious as their representatives gathered in one of TRIUMF’s conference rooms. The atmosphere was light and humorous and the mutual respect between both parties was evident.
TRIUMF’s Deputy Director, Dr. Reiner Kruecken, addressed the group, which included TU Darmstadt’s President, Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Prömel. Kruecken spoke about TRIUMF’s history and research as it relates to partnership with TU Darmstadt such as the existing strong connection in nuclear theory and rare isotope science, as well as new opportunities in accelerator science and engineering.
“There are several areas of respective strength and joint interest on which our collaboration will thrive ,” said Kruecken. “This involves research in nuclear physics, accelerator science and related technologies, in addition to materials science, robotics, and radiation biophysics.”
After the signing of the MOU, the group embarked on a tour of TRIUMF, led by Kruecken and Dr. Jens Dilling, TRIUMF’s Associate Laboratory Director – Physical Sciences, who both did their PhDs (and were born) in Germany.
Germany has a strong presence at TRIUMF as it stands seeing as three members of the leadership team and nine researchers are originally from Germany. The signing of this MOU further strengthens the relationship between TRIUMF and German universities, and the country as a whole.
TRIUMF is honored to have hosted our TU Darmstadt friends and we look forward to exploring our shared interests in science and discovery together!
