Hours of Work
Core hours are those ‘peak’ hours falling within the normal hours of business, when employees are normally expected to be on site so they may interact more efficiently with other departments internally and externally. At TRIUMF, core hours are 9:30am to 3:00pm, and work schedules should be established in such a way so as to include these hours. TRIUMF offers personal, flexible work schedules available to eligible employees depending on departmental needs. Please discuss your working hours with your supervisor. Regular hours of work are 7.5 hours per day for Technicians, and 7 hours per day for all others.
Lunch and Rest Breaks
lunch, in accordance with their personal hours of work schedule. Staff are also entitled to take two (paid) 15 minute breaks each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Breaks should not hinder work in progress and should be taken with this in consideration. Unused breaks shall not reduce the daily hours of work.
Overtime
Work outside of the normal office hours may be necessary from time to time to meet deadlines. When overtime is necessary, it must be authorized in advance by your supervisor, and will be compensated as outlined in the Overtime Policy. All employees, with the exception of those who work in a supervisory or managerial role, are eligible for overtime compensation or time off in lieu of pay. Those employees in a professional, supervisory or managerial role are entitled to compensatory time off in lieu of extra hours worked. All overtime must be recorded on the semi-monthly or hourly timesheet, and forwarded to Human Resources.
Vacations
Semi-monthly timesheets for payroll purposes must be completed by all staff and submitted to Human Resources twice a month. These timesheets capture such things as overtime, vacation days & sick time.
Absence Notification
If you are ill for any reason, you must notify your manager or supervisor (or his/her designate) immediately on the morning of your absence. The receptionist should also be advised. It is necessary that the appropriate person be contacted directly, and that this individual be kept informed of the progress of your illness and expected date of return to work. If the duration of the illness exceeds three days, a doctor’s certificate may be required at the manager’s discretion.
Statutory Holidays
All salaried TRIUMF employees are eligible to be paid for a holiday if they are on the payroll when the holiday occurs. Hourly employees are eligible to be paid for a holiday if they are on the payroll for twenty-one working days prior to the holiday. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the office will be closed on either the preceding Friday or the following Monday, as determined by TRIUMF.
Christmas Closure
Each year, TRIUMF closes its facility for nonessential activities during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season. This closure is in addition to the normal statutory holidays falling in this period. During the closure, staff are expected to make up the additional days off either with their vacation days, flex days, accumulated time or overtime hours in lieu of pay.
