The American Physical Society (APS) has selected Barry Davids, TRIUMF Research Scientist and Deputy Department Head, Nuclear Physics, as an Outstanding Referee for 2024.
Initiated in 2008, the Outstanding Referee program recognizes researchers who contribute to the advancement of physics through keen-eyed review and evaluation of manuscripts for APS journals. Referees maintain the APS’s high standards for excellence, including for overall quality and readability, through assessment and constructive feedback, providing invaluable edits and improvements on thousands of manuscripts for publication.
Each year, Outstanding Referees are selected from a roster of over 91,000 active APS referees. Davids is the fourth TRIUMF employee to be recognized with this distinction, following Shane Koscielniak in 2020, Doug Bryman in 2012, and Rick Baartman in 2011.
“It’s a great honour for me to be recognized by the American Physical Society in this way, as three of my esteemed TRIUMF colleagues have been in the past,” said Davids. “I view refereeing as an essential service to the community, but it can also be pleasurable and almost always presents great opportunities to learn. The APS is to be commended for the brilliant way that it highlights the importance of conscientious, thorough, and timely refereeing to the advancement of physics through its Outstanding Referee awards.”
“I’ve worked with Barry for over 20 years and have come to know him as an exceptionally diligent physicist whose careful scrutiny and exactitude in the design of experimental devices, and data analysis have benefited TRIUMF greatly,” said Chris Ruiz, TRIUMF Research Scientist and Department Head, Nuclear Physics. “These attributes have also served the scientific community through his refereeing work, and I’m very glad that this has been recognized by the APS. Congratulations Barry!”
Well said, Chris – and congrats, Barry!
