TRIUMF welcomed representatives from the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone (NETDZ) on Friday. The Honorable Mr. Raymond Chan and his wife Mrs. Ting Ting Chan convened the meeting between TRIUMF and the group from China, who were on an international business trip to Canada and Germany to meet with potential high-tech partners. TRIUMF possesses leading technology in accelerators and the production and application of medical isotopes. After a presentation on the lab, the parties engaged in a productive discussion of partnership opportunities, followed by a tour of TRIUMF’s world-class cyclotron facility.
Mr. Zhen Jin Zang, Party Secretary of the NETDZ, led the delegation, consisting of Mr. Yi Min Xu, Mr. Yin Long Shen, Mr. Jun Xiong, Mr. Zheng Rong Tian, and Mr. Wei Wei. The NETDZ is one of China’s major centres for high-tech industry, a hub for investment and new operations in emerging economic sectors.
TRIUMF is a world leader in medical isotope technology. During the meeting, TRIUMF Director Dr. Nigel Lockyer introduced techniques pioneered at TRIUMF to more efficiently produce medical isotopes, and diagnose and treat diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. TRIUMF is uniquely positioned to lead the development of these technologies with its high-intensity cyclotron – the largest in the world, and represents an opportunity for international partnerships.
TRIUMF continues to be an global centre for accelerator research and innovation. Through this new global partnership with the NETDZ, TRIUMF has an opportunity to share its world-class innovation with a new market. The productive meeting concluded with a commitment by both parties to further explore the best approach to establish new cyclotron technology in the NETDZ.
