Scientists involved with radioactive-beam experiments at TRIUMF have a new reference guidebook that will prove to be an invaluable resource. Edited by Drs. Jens Dilling, Reiner Kruecken, and Lia Merminga, and published by Springer, ISAC and ARIEL: The TRIUMF Radioactive Beam Facilities and the Scientific Program, is a new reference compendium detailing each step of the radioactive beam’s path from the main cyclotron to the ISAC post-accelerator and beamlines. In addition, every ISAC experiment has its own dedicated chapter detailing its purpose and operation. Experts on each section wrote individual chapters, all subsequently carefully crafted by Jens, Reiner, and Lia in a seamless whole, so that all the information is as direct and detailed as possible.
ISAC and ARIEL originally appeared as a special issue of Hyperfine Interactions earlier this year and is just now available as a hardback and a downloadable e-book from the Springer’s website. Individual chapters are also available for readers interested solely in particular sections.
ISAC and ARIEL not only contains details on ISAC’s present, but also on its history and its future as ARIEL comes to full fruition. After covering 25 years of the beam’s history, three full chapters are dedicated to a description of ARIEL’s purpose, design, and connection to the existing science program at TRIUMF. For anyone planning projects with the new facility or involved with current experiments in ISAC, the vivid detail this book offers surely will be an essential reference for years to come.
